What this drill teaches

The core footwork shapes — jump stop, pivots, drop step, closeout — drilled as a reaction game. Reacting to a surprise call, with a penalty for the wrong shape, is what turns each move from a copied pose into an automatic response.

In games: Games never announce which move is coming. Players whose stops and pivots are automatic don't travel on the catch or fly past shooters on closeouts.

What good looks like
  • Jump stops landing on two feet at once, knees bent
  • The pivot foot staying glued through every turn
  • Players staying on the balls of their feet between calls

U8: stick to a few moves, call them slowly, and expect wrong shapes and giggles. U12: expect crisp shapes at speed, and hand the calling job to a player.

Equipment

No ball needed

Setup

Players spread out facing the coach with room to move in every direction.

Steps

  1. 1Coach calls a move: jump stop, drop step, front pivot, reverse pivot, or closeout.
  2. 2Players perform it immediately — but only if the coach says 'footwork says' first.
  3. 3React to a call without the magic words, or perform the wrong shape, and you owe one lap of the key.
  4. 4Last three players with no laps win the round.

Coaching points

  • Jump stop: land both feet at once, knees bent, ready to move again.
  • Pivot: the ball of the foot stays glued to the floor.
  • Closeout: short choppy steps and a high hand — don't fly at it.
  • Stay on the balls of your feet between calls so you can react.

Why kids love it

Footwork is the base of everything else and the hardest thing to make interesting. This turns fifty repetitions into a game the group asks for.

Variations

Easier

Four moves only, called slowly, and no penalty laps.

Harder

Everyone holds a ball and must protect it through every move.

Switch it

A player takes over as the caller — they have to name the shapes correctly too.

Add a sprint

Every third call is 'go', and players sprint to a sideline and back.
