What this drill teaches

The legal footwork that beats pressure: jump stop, pivot, pass. Light defence means kids must actually use the pivot to shield the ball — it stops being a rule to remember and becomes a tool that works.

In games: Rescues the trapped player — instead of panicking, travelling or throwing the ball away when a defender swarms the catch, they pivot away from pressure and find a teammate.

What good looks like
  • Pivot foot glued to the floor through the whole move
  • Ball ripped through, not held out in front of the defender
  • Passes released to the side away from the defender's hands

U8: shuffled pivot feet and travels are normal — correct them gently. U12: expect strong rips, quick reads and the pass away inside two seconds.

Equipment

1 ball per group

Setup

Groups of 3–4 around a small circle, one defender lightly pressures the ball.

Steps

  1. 1Player with the ball uses a jump stop, then pivots to protect it from the defender.
  2. 2Find an open teammate and make a chest or bounce pass.
  3. 3Passer becomes the new defender; keep it moving.
  4. 4Rotate so everyone pivots, passes and defends.

Coaching points

  • Keep your pivot foot planted — don't travel.
  • 'Rip' the ball through, keep it away from the defender.
  • Pass to the hand away from the defender.

Why kids love it

Light defence makes it a mini-game — kids love the 1-on-1 element while secretly learning footwork rules.

Variations

Easier

No defender — just call out 'pivot!' and 'pass!' as a coach.

Harder

Add a two-second count on the ball — pivot, find the pass and release before the coach reaches two.
