What this drill teaches

Advancing the ball by pass instead of dribble. With deflectors blocking the corridor and every deflection costing time, players learn to look two lines ahead and change the pass type to fit the defender in front of them.

In games: This is press-break and fast-break passing — teams that can move the ball up the floor by hand beat pressure and score before the defence sets.

What good looks like
  • Eyes looking past the nearest deflector to the pass after next
  • Overhead and bounce passes chosen to match the defender's hands
  • Runners sprinting level with the ball, not trailing it

U12: expect deflections and short, safe passes — widen the corridor if trips stall. U14–U16: expect two-lines-ahead reads and finish trips with a layup so the pressure stays real.

Equipment

1 ball, full court, 4 cones

Setup

Cone a corridor down the middle third of the court. Four attackers start on one baseline; three or four deflectors are spaced through the corridor and may only move sideways along their own line.

Steps

  1. 1No dribbling — the ball travels baseline to baseline entirely by pass.
  2. 2Attackers may run freely; deflectors slide left and right on their line only.
  3. 3A deflection sends the ball back to the start and costs the attackers ten seconds.
  4. 4Time each team's trip down and back; fastest total wins.

Coaching points

  • Look past the nearest deflector — the safe pass is often two lines ahead.
  • Change the pass type: overhead over a tall deflector, bounce past a high-handed one.
  • Sprint to get level with the ball, not behind it.
  • Deflectors: read the passer's eyes, don't just guess.

Why kids love it

Teaches players to advance the ball with passes rather than dribbling it up, which is exactly what breaks a press and what starts a fast break.

Variations

Easier

Widen the corridor and use two deflectors.

Harder

Deflectors may move one metre forward or back as well as sideways.

Switch it

Finish with a layup — the trip only counts when the ball goes in.

Two balls

Run two balls at once so attackers must track both.
