Play a scrimmage where only the defence scores, so effort on that end finally shows up on a scoreboard.
Defensive effort you can count. Because only the defence scores, hands in passing lanes, contests and box-outs — things that never make a normal scoreboard — become the whole game.
In games: Changes what your team celebrates: tipped passes and contested misses start winning praise, so game-day defence gets active hands instead of spectators.
U12: count generously — any honest touch is a deflection, and reaching fouls will happen. U14–U16: expect disciplined hands, and use the foul penalty so effort stays clean.
1 ball, half court
Two teams of four on a half court. Coach keeps score out loud.
Young players get praised for baskets and rarely for a tipped pass. Inverting the scoreboard for ten minutes changes what the team celebrates for the rest of the season.
Three-on-three, and count any touch on the ball as a deflection.
Subtract two points for any foul, so the effort has to stay disciplined.
Award five points for a charge taken or a jump ball forced.
Play it full court so transition defence counts too.
