What this drill teaches

The bridge between drills and real games. Live play with a single focus rule concentrates everyone on one habit at a time, and the coach's freeze button lets teaching land in the exact moment it applies — the fastest way lessons stick.

In games: Closes the gap every parent coach knows — the team that does drills beautifully then forgets everything at the game — by making practice habits survive live play.

What good looks like
  • The week's focus rule visibly shaping possessions
  • Players resetting and applying the correction after a freeze
  • Real competitiveness that stays coachable

U12: half court, frequent stops, generous whistle. U16: expect full-court flow, scenario endings, and corrections applied without a second stop.

Equipment

1 ball, full court

Setup

Two teams, 5-on-5 (or 4-on-4), full or half court.

Steps

  1. 1Play live game-like possessions.
  2. 2Coach can freeze play to teach a quick point, then restart.
  3. 3Enforce one focus rule (e.g. everyone touches it, or box out every shot).
  4. 4Keep the score and make it matter.

Coaching points

  • Play your role and your spacing.
  • Communicate on defence.
  • Compete — but stay coachable.

Why kids love it

Kids come to play games; a controlled scrimmage lets them compete while still learning.

Variations

Easier

Half court, fewer players, generous whistle.

Harder

Play with a live shot clock and a rule that every possession must start with a transition push.

Situations

Set the clock and score before each possession — down two with fifteen seconds, and so on.
