What this drill teaches

Catching on balance and pivoting legally — the two things young players get whistled for most. The jump-stop catch gives them a choice of pivot foot, and the circle keeps the reps flowing without queues.

In games: Directly cuts the two most common youth whistles — the travel on the catch and the panicked throw-away when a defender arrives.

What good looks like
  • Two-foot landings on every catch
  • The pivot foot staying glued while they turn
  • A target hand shown before each pass

U8: stationary passes with the receiver's name called first. U12: expect smooth catch-pivot-pass on the move, a light defender, and front-or-reverse pivots on call.

Equipment

1 ball per group

Setup

Small groups in a circle, one ball.

Steps

  1. 1Catch a pass on a two-foot jump stop.
  2. 2Pivot to face a new teammate.
  3. 3Pass and follow to their spot.
  4. 4Keep the ball moving around the circle.

Coaching points

  • Land on two feet, balanced.
  • Keep the pivot foot planted.
  • Give a target before the pass.

Why kids love it

Warms up the two things little kids get whistled for — travelling and wild passes.

Variations

Harder

Add a light defender in the middle once the group is four or more.

Easier

Pass from a stationary spot and call the receiver's name before you throw.

Reverse Pivot

Call 'front' or 'reverse' as the ball leaves so the catcher has to choose the pivot on the fly.
