Wake up the hands and get a feel for the ball in the first minute of practice.
Comfort and confidence with the ball in the hands. High-repetition touches with no defender, no dribble and no way to fail mean even the newest player gets dozens of successful contacts with the ball before practice proper begins.
In games: Players who are relaxed with the ball in their hands don't fumble simple catches or panic when the game starts — the first minutes of a match feel like something they've already done.
U8–U10: dropped balls on every wrap are normal — just keep the reps coming. U14–U16: expect fast, silent hands and eyes up the whole time.
1 ball each
Everyone spreads out with a ball, standing in athletic stance.
A quick, no-pressure way for even nervous kids to touch the ball a lot right away.
Do it with eyes closed, or on one leg for balance.
Wrap the waist only and count out loud together to set the rhythm.
Count your wraps in 20 seconds and try to beat it next practice.
