What this drill teaches

The simplest decision in basketball, isolated: one defender, two attackers, one read. If the defender takes you, pass; if they take the pass, score. Repping it with a rotating defender makes the read faster and calmer each time.

In games: Fixes the squandered fast break — the game-day 2-on-1 that ends in a wild forced layup or a panic pass out of bounds instead of the easy basket it should be.

What good looks like
  • Attackers wide, stretching the defender to choose
  • The pass thrown early and on time, not under the rim
  • Eyes on the defender, not on the ball or the floor

U10: freeze the defender's feet so the read is readable. U14–U16: expect full-speed breaks with a live defender, and the no-dribble version.

Equipment

1 ball, half court

Setup

Two attackers, one defender, starting from the top going to the rim.

Steps

  1. 1Attackers push the ball and spread wide.
  2. 2Read the defender: if they stop the ball, pass; if they play the pass, score.
  3. 3Finish with a layup.
  4. 4Rotate the defender each rep.

Coaching points

  • Spread out to stretch the defender.
  • Pass early — don't wait until under the rim.
  • Attacker without the ball stays wide and ready.

Why kids love it

Scoring on a break feels great, and kids learn to 'read' instead of forcing a shot.

Variations

Harder

Defender starts even with the ball for a real race.

Easier

Freeze the defender's feet on the line so the attackers only practise the read and the pass.

No Dribble

Attackers may only pass — it forces them to move the ball ahead rather than drive into the defender.
