What this drill teaches

Weak-hand strength you can't fake. With a ball in each hand there is nowhere for the weak hand to hide — every pound, piston and crossover forces it to match the strong hand while the eyes stay up.

In games: Shows up on game day as a player who can dribble away from pressure to either side — defenders can no longer cheat by forcing everything onto the weak hand.

What good looks like
  • Both balls controlled at the same height and rhythm
  • Low stance held, dribbling on fingertips not palms
  • Eyes up — able to call a partner's finger count mid-combo

U12: balls flying everywhere is the drill working — stick to pounds and pistons. U14–U16: expect clean combos on the move with eyes up throughout.

Equipment

2 balls each

Setup

Each player with two balls, in a low athletic stance.

Steps

  1. 1Pound both balls together, then alternate ('piston') — 20 each.
  2. 2Double crossovers in front — both balls at once.
  3. 3Two-ball behind-the-back or between-the-legs.
  4. 4Two-ball while walking the baseline and back.

Coaching points

  • Stay low, fingertips, eyes up.
  • Control both balls — quality before speed.
  • Push the weak hand to keep up.

Why kids love it

Two-ball work forces the weak hand to carry its weight — a favourite of serious young players.

Variations

Easier

Pound and piston dribbles only.

Harder

Have a partner call out random numbers on their fingers so players must keep their eyes up through every combo.

Clean-reps race

Set 30 seconds of two-ball pistons and count only the cycles where neither ball leaves the fingertips.
