What this drill teaches

Playing both ends without a rest between them. The instant flip from attack to defence trains the sprint-back reflex and floor-spacing habits at game speed — and builds genuine basketball fitness while feeling like a game.

In games: Most easy youth baskets come from one team jogging back — this builds the team that sprints the floor both ways and gives up nothing cheap in transition.

What good looks like
  • Wide lanes filled at a sprint, not a jog behind the ball
  • The ball moving ahead to the open player early
  • All three back on defence — nobody watching the shot

U12: half court with resets while legs and habits build. U16: expect continuous full-court play, ahead passes only, and beating the late fourth defender.

Equipment

1 ball, full court

Setup

Three vs three; a coach or extra player feeds new balls to start each break.

Steps

  1. 1Coach outlets to a team to start a fast break.
  2. 2Attack 3-on-3 in transition and score.
  3. 3On a stop or make, the other team pushes back the other way.
  4. 4Run it up and down for a set time.

Coaching points

  • Sprint the lanes wide.
  • Find the open teammate ahead.
  • Get back on defence — nobody watches.

Why kids love it

Full-court running is exactly what kids love, and it builds transition instincts and fitness.

Variations

Easier

Half court only, reset each possession.

Harder

Add a fourth defender who joins two seconds late so the attackers must beat the help.

Ahead Pass Only

The first pass after the rebound must go forward — no pass back to the rebounder.
