Push the ball at speed, then stop under control.
Pairing speed with control. Pushing the ball flat-out and then freezing on a whistle teaches the two-gear skill young players lack most: going fast is easy, and stopping balanced is easy — doing both in the same trip is the drill.
In games: Fixes the fast-break blur who sprints into a charge or throws the ball away at the rim — a player who can stop under control turns speed into points instead of turnovers.
U8: expect skids, travels and overruns — praise any balanced stop. U12: demand full-speed pushes, clean weak-hand lengths, and instant frozen stops.
1 ball each
Players spread on the baseline, each with a ball.
Going fast is fun; the whistle-freeze adds a reaction challenge they enjoy.
Weak hand only, or add a crossover on the stop.
Walk-dribble to the free-throw line and jump-stop there.
Pivot once each way after every jump stop before pushing off again.
