What this drill teaches

Decision-making with scoreboard and clock attached. Playing named scenarios — then freezing to teach the key choice — means the team meets game-deciding moments in practice first, where mistakes cost nothing.

In games: The moments that decide real games — down two with 30 seconds, protecting a lead, a must-score inbound — stop being brand new the first time they happen for real.

What good looks like
  • Players stating the situation before the ball goes live
  • Talk under pressure — reminders about time, score and fouls
  • Deliberate possessions that fit the scenario, not autopilot basketball

U12: one clear half-court scenario per session — confusion under the clock is normal. U14–U16: expect managed fouls, inbound execution, and multiple scenarios per practice.

Equipment

1 ball, full court

Setup

Two teams, 5-on-5 (or fewer). Coach sets a scenario.

Steps

  1. 1Play a scenario: down 2 with 30 seconds, or need a stop.
  2. 2Coach freezes play to teach the key decision.
  3. 3Run it again until the team executes.
  4. 4Rotate scenarios: last shot, protect a lead, inbound plays.

Coaching points

  • Understand the situation before the ball is live.
  • Communicate and execute under pressure.
  • Value every possession.

Why kids love it

Prepares teams for the moments that actually decide games — and it's exciting.

Variations

Easier

Simplify to one clear scenario, half court.

Harder

Add a foul count and free throws so the team manages fouls as well as the clock.

Inbound only

Start every rep from a sideline or baseline inbound with three seconds on the clock.
