What this drill teaches

Shooting while people are counting on you. The relay adds hurry and teammates' eyes — the two things that break young shooting form — so players practise keeping a balanced, unrushed shot inside genuine excitement.

In games: Game shots come with noise, fatigue and pressure — kids who've made hurried-but-balanced shots for a relay team don't crumble when a real game asks for the same thing.

What good looks like
  • Shot rhythm staying the same even while racing
  • Misses rebounded at a sprint, no head-drops
  • Loud teammates — cheering, not just waiting for a turn

U8–U10: shoot from right at the rim so the relay actually moves. U14–U16: expect the step-back version and composure when a miss costs ground.

Equipment

1 ball and 1 hoop per team, cones to mark the spot

Setup

Split into teams behind a shooting spot; each team has a ball.

Steps

  1. 1First player shoots; if they miss, they rebound and shoot until it goes in.
  2. 2On the make, rebound and pass to the next teammate, then go to the back.
  3. 3First team to a set number of makes wins.
  4. 4Move the spot each round.

Coaching points

  • Rebound your own miss quickly.
  • Balanced shot even when rushing.
  • Cheer your teammates on.

Why kids love it

Team relays crank the energy — kids shoot harder when the team is counting on them.

Variations

Easier

Shoot from right by the rim.

Harder

Move a step further out after every team make, and a miss moves you a step back in.

Make-Two Relay

Each player must make two in a row before the next teammate can shoot.
