What this drill teaches

Turning the catch into a decision. Because the defender's closeout dictates the right answer — short means shoot, flying means drive, help means pass — players learn to catch on balance and read before deciding, instead of pre-choosing.

In games: Cures the game-day player who catches and freezes, or drives into a set defender no matter what — attackers who read closeouts punish whatever the defence gives.

What good looks like
  • Catching on balance, shot-ready, eyes on the defender
  • Different answers on different reps — not the same move every time
  • Drives attacking past the defender's momentum, not into their chest

U12: call the closeout type aloud so the read is known — reacting live comes later. U14–U16: fully live with a help defender, all three answers appearing.

Equipment

1 ball, half court

Setup

A passer up top, a shooter on the wing, a defender who closes out.

Steps

  1. 1Catch on the wing as the defender closes out.
  2. 2If they close out short, shoot.
  3. 3If they fly at you, drive past their momentum.
  4. 4If help comes, pass to the open teammate.

Coaching points

  • Catch on balance, ready to shoot.
  • Read the closeout — don't decide before you catch.
  • Attack the high shoulder to drive by.

Why kids love it

Turns the catch into a decision — the skill that makes attackers hard to guard.

Variations

Harder

Add a help defender so the pass read becomes live.

Easier

Call the closeout type out loud before the pass so the read is known.

Scoring twist

Give 2 points for a drive finish and 1 for a jumper so players hunt the drive read.
