What this drill teaches

First-step quickness and change of direction, with zero technique talk. Escaping a tagger only works by staying on the balls of the feet and cutting sharply — the game demands it, so kids just do it.

In games: The same escape footwork gets players open on offence and keeps them in front of their player on defence — quickness with a purpose, not just running laps.

What good looks like
  • Players on the balls of their feet, never flat-footed
  • Sharp cuts and fakes instead of straight-line running
  • Heads up, scanning to dodge collisions

U8: one tagger and a small box — expect wild running and giggles. U12: expect deliberate fakes and add a ball in every hand.

  • Change direction to escape.
  • Stay on the balls of your feet.
  • Heads up to avoid collisions.

Why kids love it

Pure fun and instant energy — a great first two minutes of practice.

Variations

Harder

Everyone dribbles a ball while playing.

Easier

Shrink the box and use one tagger so nobody is chased for long.

Frozen Statues

Tagged players freeze in a defensive stance until a teammate crawls under their arm to free them.
