What this drill teaches

Discovering that passing moves a defender faster than dribbling ever could. The castle can only be hit when the defender is shifted out of the way — and only quick ball movement and fakes can shift them.

In games: The antidote to one-player-does-everything offence — kids learn in their bones that the ball moving quickly is what creates openings against a set defence.

What good looks like
  • The ball zipping around the circle without being held
  • Pass fakes that move the defender before the real pass
  • The defender constantly shifting, never set

U8: step a metre closer and use bounce passes — long holds are normal. U12: expect the two-second rule and beating two defenders on two castles.

Equipment

1 ball, cones

Setup

Stand a cone ('castle') in the middle. One defender guards it; the rest form a circle with a ball.

Steps

  1. 1The circle passes the ball around and tries to knock the castle over.
  2. 2The defender blocks and deflects passes and shots.
  3. 3Whoever knocks it over becomes the new defender.
  4. 4Rotate so everyone defends.

Coaching points

  • Move the ball fast to shift the defender.
  • Fake a pass, make a pass.
  • Defender: stay active and read the passers.

Why kids love it

Fast passing plus a clear target makes teamwork instantly fun.

Variations

Harder

Two defenders guarding two castles.

Easier

Let the passers step a metre closer and knock the castle over with bounce passes.

Two-second rule

Passers may hold the ball for two seconds only before it has to move.
