What this drill teaches

Closing the gap between practice shots and game shots. Every rep has a live closeout, a decision and a score that matters — so the shooter learns to hold balanced form, and make the shoot-or-drive read, with a defender flying at them.

In games: Fixes the player who shoots 80 per cent in warm-up and bricks everything on game day — their reps finally look like the contested, hurried shots real games offer.

What good looks like
  • Feet set and shot-ready before the catch arrives
  • Read made after the catch — shooting short closeouts, driving hard ones
  • Form unchanged with a hand in the face

U12: half-speed closeouts and catch-and-shoot only. U14–U16: full-speed contests, a second helper in the paint, and sudden-death scoring for real pressure.

Equipment

1 ball, 1 hoop

Setup

A shooter, a passer, and a defender who closes out from under the rim.

Steps

  1. 1Passer hits the shooter; the defender closes out hard.
  2. 2Shooter reads it: shoot, or drive one dribble to score.
  3. 3Every make is a point; play to a target (e.g. 7).
  4. 4Rotate shooter, passer and defender each round.

Coaching points

  • Feet set and ready before the catch.
  • Read the closeout, then decide.
  • Balanced shot even with a hand in your face.

Why kids love it

Bridges practice shooting and game shooting — every rep has a live defender and a score.

Variations

Easier

Closeout at half speed; catch-and-shoot only.

Harder

Add a second defender helping from the paint so the shooter must beat two.

Sudden death

Take a point back for every miss so players have to shoot under real pressure.
