What this drill teaches

Calm as a team skill. Against pressure the drill makes the answers physical habits — space out, meet every pass, look up the floor — so the moment that panics young teams becomes a rehearsed routine.

In games: The full-court press is the great youth-basketball disaster — a practised break turns those eight-second panics and backcourt turnovers into easy baskets the other way.

What good looks like
  • Spacing held — nobody running toward the ball to 'help'
  • Receivers meeting the pass instead of drifting away
  • Eyes up the floor immediately after every catch

U12: half-court pressure only, and some panicked throws are expected. U14–U16: expect composed play against traps on the first pass and sideline inbound starts.

Why kids love it

Presses panic young teams — practising a calm break turns chaos into easy baskets.

Variations

Easier

Half-court pressure only to start.

Harder

Defence traps the first pass every time so the ball-handler must split it or reverse it.

Sideline out

Start every rep from a sideline inbound at half way instead of under your own basket.
