What this drill teaches

Passing to where a teammate is going, not where they are. Jogging side by side means every pass must be led into the runner's stride, which is a different skill from standing-still passing.

In games: Fixes the fast-break killer — the pass thrown behind a sprinting teammate that bounces out of bounds or stalls the break.

What good looks like
  • Passes caught in stride without slowing down
  • A target hand shown before each pass
  • The pair holding about three metres of spacing the whole way

U8: walk it with chest passes only — collisions and drops are normal. U12: expect crisp two-touch passing at a jog and the three-player weave.

Equipment

1 ball per pair

Setup

Partners side by side, one ball, at the baseline.

Steps

  1. 1Jog up the court passing back and forth.
  2. 2Lead your partner so they catch it in stride.
  3. 3Chest passes up, bounce passes back.
  4. 4Turn and come back down the other way.

Coaching points

  • Lead the receiver, don't pass behind them.
  • Give a target hand.
  • Keep spacing — about 3 metres apart.

Why kids love it

Gets legs and hands warm together and previews real game passing.

Variations

Harder

Add a third player in the middle for weave passing.

Easier

Walk the length instead of jogging and only use chest passes.

Two-Touch

Cap it at two touches — catch and pass — so nobody carries the ball up the floor.
