What this drill teaches

Heads-up dribbling without a single reminder. You can't copy a move you didn't see, so watching the partner — not the ball — becomes the only way to play the game.

In games: A player who dribbles watching the floor sees the trap coming and finds the open teammate — fewer blind dribbles into trouble on game day.

What good looks like
  • Eyes locked on the partner, not the ball
  • Moves copied at matching speed, not a beat late
  • The dribble staying alive even during tricky copies

U8: followers will lose the ball copying — that's the drill working. U12: expect crossovers and between-the-legs mirrored while moving along a path.

Equipment

1 ball each

Setup

Partners face each other about a metre apart, each with a ball.

Steps

  1. 1One partner is the leader and does dribble moves.
  2. 2The other mirrors every move exactly.
  3. 3Swap leaders every 20 seconds.
  4. 4Keep eyes on your partner, not the ball.

Coaching points

  • Head up to read your partner.
  • Match the move and the speed.
  • Protect your own dribble.

Why kids love it

The copycat game forces heads-up dribbling without a single reminder.

Variations

Harder

Leader adds crossovers and between-the-legs.

Easier

Leader stays still and only changes hands, so the follower can keep up.

Shadow Mirror

Leader walks slowly in any direction and the follower must mirror the move and the path.
