What this drill teaches

The link between a rebound and a fast break. Repping secure-pivot-outlet as one sequence teaches rebounders that the job isn't finished at the catch — and teaches guards to be somewhere useful before the rebound comes down.

In games: Fixes the game-day stall where a rebounder stands admiring the catch while the break dies — a sharp outlet gets your team scoring before the defence exists.

What good looks like
  • Ball secured and chinned before any pass is considered
  • Pivot to the outside, away from the middle traffic
  • A strong, flat outlet — no floaty lob across the key

U10: hand them the ball and build the pivot-and-pass habit slowly. U14–U16: expect live misses, pressure on the rebounder, and the guard pushing on the catch.

Equipment

1 ball, 1 hoop

Setup

A rebounder under the rim, a guard filling the wing/sideline.

Steps

  1. 1Coach shoots a miss; rebounder grabs it.
  2. 2Pivot to the outside, chin the ball.
  3. 3Snap a strong outlet pass to the guard on the wing.
  4. 4Guard catches facing up-court, ready to go.

Coaching points

  • Secure it first, then look to outlet.
  • Pivot away from the middle.
  • Strong two-hand overhead or push pass.

Why kids love it

It connects defence to offence — kids see how a rebound turns into a fast break.

Variations

Harder

Add a light defender on the rebounder.

Easier

Hand the rebounder the ball instead of shooting a miss.

Outlet and Go

The guard catches and pushes two dribbles up the floor before resetting.
