What this drill teaches

Shooting on balance after sprinting. Coming off a screen at speed then rising into a controlled pull-up forces the hard part — the gather: feet set, square, no drift — so game-speed movement ends in a practice-form shot.

In games: Fixes the game-day shooter whose form is lovely in warm-up but crumbles at speed — the shot after the sprint becomes as clean as the shot standing still.

What good looks like
  • Tight off the screen, no wide loop
  • Gather on two feet with no sideways drift
  • Feet set and square before the rise, every rep

U14: catch-and-shoot off the screen first — the dribble pull-up adds too much at once. U16: live defender on the hip and footwork read off a 'curl' or 'fade' call.

Equipment

1 ball, 1 hoop, chair/cone

Setup

A chair or cone as the screen; a passer feeds the shooter.

Steps

  1. 1Sprint off the screen to catch on the move.
  2. 2Take one dribble into the pull-up if needed.
  3. 3Gather on two feet, set and square.
  4. 4Rise straight up and shoot on balance.

Coaching points

  • Come off the screen low and tight.
  • Gather under control — don't drift.
  • Feet set and square before you rise.

Why kids love it

Combines running off screens with shooting on balance — a genuine game skill for older guards.

Variations

Easier

Catch-and-shoot off the screen, no dribble.

Harder

Put a live defender on the shooter's hip coming off the screen.

Curl or fade

Call 'curl' or 'fade' as the shooter reaches the screen so the footwork becomes a read.
