What this drill teaches

Legal, balanced footwork on the catch. Landing on two feet and keeping one planted gives players a stable base and a rulebook-proof platform — and the chair teaches them to pivot their body between ball and trouble.

In games: Directly attacks the travel — the most common whistle at U8–U12 — and replaces the panicked freeze-or-shuffle on the catch with a calm pivot to safety.

What good looks like
  • Both feet landing together on the catch
  • Pivot foot glued to the floor through every turn
  • Body turned to shield the ball from the chair

U8: use hand-offs and expect dragged pivot feet for weeks — that's normal. U12: expect clean stride stops too, with the correct foot identified every time.

Equipment

1 ball, chair/cone

Setup

Player receives a pass from a coach near the wing, with a chair or cone in front of them as the defender.

Steps

  1. 1Catch on a two-foot jump stop.
  2. 2Establish a pivot foot and pivot to face the basket.
  3. 3Pivot to put your body between the ball and the chair.
  4. 4Finish by passing back or driving.

Coaching points

  • Land on two feet at the same time.
  • Keep the pivot foot planted.
  • Stay low and balanced.

Why kids love it

Travelling is the most common little-kid whistle — this fixes it and builds confidence.

Variations

Harder

Add a defender to pivot away from.

Easier

Catch a stationary hand-off instead of a pass while the footwork settles.

Stride Stop

Run the same drill with a one-two stride stop so they feel which foot is stuck.
