What this drill teaches

The rotation behind the rotation. When one defender leaves to stop a drive, someone must cover the player they abandoned — the weak-side defender closes the corner and the helper 'X-es out' the other way, so help never leaves a shooter free.

In games: Fixes the game-day pattern where your team stops the drive but gives up the wide-open kick-out three — the second and third defenders learn their job starts when the help leaves.

What good looks like
  • Defenders moving as the pass leaves, not after the catch
  • Controlled closeouts with a high hand, no fly-bys
  • Loud talk claiming players: 'I've got ball, you take corner!'

U12: rotations arrive a beat late with coach-paced passes — that's progress. U14–U16: play live 3-on-3 and expect back-to-back rotations without a free shot.

Equipment

1 ball, half court

Setup

Ball on the wing, a shooter in the corner and one on the weak side; matched defenders.

Steps

  1. 1The ball-handler drives; the corner defender helps to stop the ball.
  2. 2The ball is kicked to the corner they left.
  3. 3The weak-side defender rotates to close out that corner.
  4. 4The helper 'X-es out' to the weak-side player. Everyone re-matches.

Coaching points

  • Rotate on the pass, not after the catch.
  • Close out under control with a high hand.
  • Talk the rotation: 'I've got ball, you take the corner!'

Why kids love it

Teaches the multi-player rotations that separate good team defences from ball-watchers.

Variations

Easier

Coach passes at half speed so players can see the rotation.

Harder

Play it live 3-on-3 and let the offence keep passing until they score or lose it.

Double rotation

Require a second kick-out so the defence has to rotate twice in the same possession.
