What this drill teaches

Wakes up the finger pads that control every catch, pass and shot. With palms banned, all the control has to come from the fingertips — and travelling the ball high to low keeps the challenge moving.

In games: Strong fingertips mean cleaner catches — fewer passes bouncing off hands and out of bounds, and rebounds that get held instead of batted away.

What good looks like
  • Ball bouncing between finger pads, never resting on palms
  • Taps continuing while the ball travels up and down
  • Arms fully extended at the top

U8–U10: arms bent at chest height with slow taps is plenty. U14–U16: expect non-stop taps head to knees, even walking around the gym.

Equipment

1 ball each

Setup

Ball held out in front at chest height.

Steps

  1. 1Tap the ball quickly between your fingertips, arms straight out.
  2. 2Move the tapping ball above your head.
  3. 3Lower it down to your knees while tapping.
  4. 4Bring it back up — never let the palms touch it.

Coaching points

  • Fingertips only, not palms.
  • Fast, light taps.
  • Arms long at the top, then travel the ball down and back up without stopping the taps.

Why kids love it

A quick hand activator that gets even nervous kids touching the ball.

Variations

Harder

Do it walking around the gym.

Easier

Tap with the arms bent in at chest height so the ball is easier to control.
