What this drill teaches

Decisions under fatigue, on repeat. The endless 3-on-2 one way, 2-on-1 back loop means every player attacks with numbers, defends outnumbered and sprints back — no queues, no rest, so habits are tested exactly when players are tired.

In games: Prepares your team for the frantic end-to-end stretches of real games — making the extra pass, protecting the rim and sprinting back when legs are gone.

What good looks like
  • Extra pass made in every numbers advantage, not hero shots
  • Shooter sprinting straight back on defence, never ball-watching
  • Outnumbered defenders protecting the rim first, then the ball

U14: the rotation confuses everyone for a session — run just the 3-on-2 phase first. U16: continuous waves at full speed, defence earning their way out with stops.

Equipment

1 ball, full court

Setup

Three attack one basket vs two defenders; outlets and a lone defender wait at the far end.

Steps

  1. 1Three attack two; score, or the defence rebounds.
  2. 2The two defenders take the ball and push the other way as a 2-on-1.
  3. 3The player who took the shot sprints back as the lone defender.
  4. 4At the far end an outlet joins to make the next wave 3-on-2. Continuous.

Coaching points

  • Make the extra pass in the numbers advantage.
  • On defence, protect the rim first, then the ball.
  • Sprint back hard — nobody watches their shot.

Why kids love it

A classic that builds decision-making, conditioning and transition defence all at once.

Variations

Easier

Run just the 3-on-2 phase repeatedly.

Nine-man version

Run it with nine by keeping only one outlet waiting at each end.

Harder

Make the defence earn two stops in a row before they get to attack.
