What this drill teaches

Matching the right move to the right problem. Each obstacle demands its own answer — a weave, a crossover, a change of direction — so kids practise choosing moves, not just performing them in a line.

In games: Game dribbling is a series of obstacles — this builds players who pick the right move at each defender instead of doing their favourite move regardless.

What good looks like
  • The correct move appearing at each obstacle
  • Control held even when racing the clock
  • Ball protected on the far side through every obstacle

U8: walk the course once, naming the move at each obstacle. U12: expect weak-hand-only runs and full-speed head-to-head races.

Equipment

1 ball each, cones/chairs

Setup

Build a course: weave cones, a crossover gate, a spin chair, a finish at the rim.

Steps

  1. 1Weave through the first set of cones.
  2. 2Crossover through the gate.
  3. 3Circle the chair with a change-of-direction dribble — a spin move for the older players.
  4. 4Finish with a layup and race the clock.

Coaching points

  • Right move for each obstacle.
  • Control first, then speed.
  • Protect the ball throughout.

Why kids love it

An obstacle course feels like an adventure — kids line up to beat their time.

Variations

Harder

Weak hand only through the whole course.

Easier

Walk the course once with no clock, naming the move at each obstacle.

Head-to-head

Build two identical courses side by side and race a partner.
