What this drill teaches

The leg endurance to hold a defensive stance, built through honest repetition. Counting line touches turns a burning-thigh grind into a beat-your-score challenge, so kids push the interval instead of standing up out of it.

In games: Most youth blow-bys happen because the defender stood up tired, not because the attacker was quick — stance endurance is what keeps kids in front in the second half.

What good looks like
  • Push-slides all the way — feet never crossing
  • Hips staying at the same low height for the whole interval
  • One hand up, one out, actively working

U8–U10: 15-second bursts of half the lane — form dies fast beyond that. U14–U16: expect full 45-second efforts with no rise in the hips.

Setup

Player starts at one edge of the free-throw lane in defensive stance.

Steps

  1. 1Slide across the lane, touch the line, slide back.
  2. 2Stay low the whole way — don't pop up.
  3. 3Hands active, one up one out.
  4. 4Go for 30–45 seconds, count touches.

Coaching points

  • Push-slide, never cross the feet.

Harder

Add a change of direction on the coach's whistle.

Easier

Zig-Zag Slides

Slide the length of the floor in a zig-zag, changing direction at each sideline.
