What this drill teaches

Dribbling under pressure inside a team plan. In enemy territory the dribble must survive real chasing — while decoys, rescues and timing turn a ball-handling drill into genuine team strategy.

In games: Builds players who keep the dribble alive under pressure AND think team-first — the decoy run that frees a teammate is the same unselfishness games run on.

What good looks like
  • Dribbles kept alive in enemy territory, not clutched
  • Deliberate decoy runs to open space for a teammate
  • Frozen players rescued quickly instead of abandoned

U10: the no-dribble version keeps everyone in the game. U14: expect real raids, planned decoys, and beating dedicated guards with the jail rule on.

Equipment

1 ball each, cones, 2 pinnies

Setup

Split the court in two. Each team guards a cone with a pinnie on it in their half. Every player has a ball.

Steps

  1. 1Dribble into the enemy half to grab the pinnie off their cone.
  2. 2If you're tagged in enemy territory, you're frozen until a teammate frees you.
  3. 3Teammates free you by tagging you.
  4. 4Dribble the pinnie back to your side to win.

Coaching points

  • Keep your dribble alive in enemy territory.
  • Work together — decoys and rescues.
  • Protect your own ball too.

Why kids love it

A whole-team strategy game that sneaks in tons of dribbling under pressure.

Variations

Easier

No dribbling required to move — just protect and grab.

Harder

Add two guards per team who may not cross half way.

Jail

Send tagged players to a jail box that a teammate has to dribble into to free them.
