What this drill teaches

Shooting for a shared goal under time pressure. Because every make counts toward one team total, rebounding, quick ball movement and encouragement all become part of shooting — and the clock adds urgency without singling anyone out.

In games: Builds shooters who stay composed when time is short — and a bench culture where teammates cheer each other's makes instead of only tracking their own.

What good looks like
  • Balanced, unhurried shots despite the ticking clock
  • Rebounds chased at a sprint to keep balls moving
  • Players urging each other toward the target out loud

U10: close-range spots and a soft target so the buzzer feels beatable. U14–U16: expect longer shots counting, honest streak rules and rising targets.

Equipment

2–3 balls and 1 hoop per group

Setup

Split into groups of 4–5, one group per hoop with a target (e.g. 20 makes in 3 minutes).

Steps

  1. 1Players rotate through a spot, each shooting and rebounding.
  2. 2Every make counts toward the team total.
  3. 3Everyone rebounds and keeps the balls moving.
  4. 4Beat the target as a team — then try to beat it again.

Coaching points

  • Rebound fast, keep the balls alive.
  • Quality shots, not rushed heaves.
  • Encourage each other to the target.

Why kids love it

A shared goal against the clock makes the whole team pull together — a great way to end practice.

Variations

Easier

Lower the target or shoot from close range.

Harder

Only makes from beyond the free-throw line count toward the total.

Team Streak

Reset the total to zero on any two consecutive misses, so they have to shoot under control.
